about

In the Quiet Golden Hour is an exploration of the state of wanting so much to be mindful and appreciative of the beauty in life that it becomes a frustration or distraction. The song was written as part of a songwriting group I participated in for nearly a year in NYC, and it began as an exercise in writing something with a driving rhythm, like Big Thief's Shark Smile or The War on Drugs' Red Eyes. It became one of the foundational songs for my second LP The Grand Routine.

lyrics

Is all this time
in the quiet golden hour
Wasted
if I can’t capture it
If I can’t see it again

Another night
On the shore in godlike light
Something to show
Something to show for what
What I did today

One more moment
In the golden hour
I can picture the slow melt of sunlight
Down the building sides

A calm moment
On the horizon
Breathe in
A place to belong
The grand routine

Can I remember
A golden hour
If I can picture
The warm rise of daylight

Though I can’t describe it
I know
And I can’t slow down
I can’t show you
And I can’t slow down

One more minute
In the golden hour
I can picture a new life
Dying
Though I can’t describe it
And I can’t slow down
